It’s easy to underestimate the importance of using the right steps to shampoo your hair. There is more to it than just adding some shampoo to your head and hoping for the best. After all, when you have good-looking hair you feel better about yourself and have more confidence. That’s important for success in life, regardless of what you intend to do. Here are 5 simple steps you need to follow when washing your hair.
Get The Right Product
There is a reason why manufacturers make an array of products, with different products for different types of hair. Manufacturers understand the difference in hair types and how they interact with products.
For example, oily hair needs a shampoo that targets the excess oil on the hair but leaves the scalp alone. After all, oil serves a useful purpose. If you have coloured hair, it is important to get a shampoo which is aimed at coloured hair, these usually have an additional layer of protection to protect your hair colour.

Rinse First
You already know that you should rinse your hair first. This removes larger pieces of debris and the warm water opens pores, allowing the shampoo to do its job. But, many people don’t wet their hair enough at this stage. It’s important you soak it completely for several minutes.
Shampoo Size
Now you’ll want to add your shampoo and that can be a difficult decision. In general, the longer your hair the more shampoo you’ll need. It’s best to start with a pea-sized amount in your hand and rub it into your hair.
It should create an even lather across your head and down all the strands. If it doesn’t you either need more shampoo or you need a different product as it’s not lathering properly. This is often due to having hard water.

Massaging Scalp
Leave the shampoo to soak into your hair for three minutes. This allows the goodness and nutrients to do their job. It should be noted that this is also a good time to massage your scalp. It helps to ensure good blow flow. The better the blood flow the more efficient your body is at removing toxins from your scalp and ensuring your hair has all the nutrients it needs.
Remember, you should be aiming for the shampoo to be in your hair for three minutes.
Rinse Thoroughly
You’re now ready to rinse your hair. At this stage, it’s important not to have the water pressure too high. The aim is to remove the shampoo lather and any remaining product. Run your hands through your hair as you rinse, to ensure all the soap is gone.
Remember, when washing your hair you shouldn’t use hot water. This is more likely to dry your hair out or damage it, causing brittle, dry, and even dull hair.
As a final point, it is worth noting that your hair is most vulnerable when it’s wet. That means you need to consider whether washing your hair every day is really necessary. For some people, it will be, for others it is possible to wash it every other day. The choice is yours.
