I have always had kitchen handles in my kitchen, never really gave them much thought though. I could open my cupboards, that’s all I needed them for. However, it wasn’t until handless kitchens came about that I understood the impact that kitchen door handles could have.
I won’t lie – handleless kitchens look nice yet empty. The Scandinavian minimalistic style of clean and sleek cupboards without handles looks modern and elegant but there’s something missing. I feel like a kitchen should feel homey and comfortable. The handleless kitchen style does not give me that feeling. There’s less personality and more of the same look time and time again.
You might have a completely different opinion than me, and I’m happy you do. That’s exactly why I decided to talk about this topic – to share opinions. To discover the advantages and disadvantages of having (or not!) kitchen cabinet handles, I’ve read countless articles and opinions from all corners of the internet and now, I’m ready to share these with you.
Kitchens with handles
Ironmongery Experts, a family-run ironmongery business, highlight the importance of door handles for kitchens (or any other space for that matter!) in a recent blog post. They mention that door handles or cabinet handles can be the “perfect finishing touch to any space”. But that’s not all.
Practical for all.
The team at Ironmongery Experts also believe that the “right cabinet door handles will not only be decorative but can also make your experience in the kitchen more smooth and straightforward.” Handles can also feature a textured surface to improve gripping and, in turn, help operate cabinet doors easier. This is something that a handleless design is missing. A handleless design could be impractical for those with mobility and strength issues affecting their hands.
Protect cabinets.
The Spruce comments that “knobs and pulls help to protect your cabinet finish because you are not transferring the oils on your fingers to the cabinet fronts.” Handles can be easily cleaned and by using handles to open and close cabinets, your cabinets will look like new for longer.
An ornamental choice.
Door handles come in a variety of styles, finishes and designs, so there will always be something to suit your interiors. So, stop looking at door handles as simply functional methods of opening and closing your kitchen cabinets.
Besides being functional, door handles can also be incredibly decorative. This also means that if you ever feel like changing things up in your kitchen, you can start by replacing the door furniture. Simple Parenting says that “choosing the right door handle, a door handle that works and that perfectly suits your home, might take some time but once you find that perfect door handle, you will never stop looking at it.”
Kitchens without handles
Sleek and minimalistic
If you are going for a minimalistic look, a handleless kitchen might be perfect for you. As this article on Home Building states a kitchen without handles offers a “sleeker kitchen design with less interruptions to the clean lines of the cabinetry. This makes a handleless style well-suited to a contemporary kitchen.”
Additional space
With a handleless kitchen, you might get a little bit more extra space, as handles will not get in the way. This is ideal for smaller kitchens. However, it is important to note that handleless kitchens are more expensive than the alternative.
