I don’t know how but today is the 3 month anniversary that I
started at my first full time job, it feels so surreal that I have worked for 3
months, 5 days a week. To a lot of people that might not sound like a big deal,
but to someone who struggled to leave the house at all a matter of two years
ago, getting my first full time job was a big deal to me as it would be to
most! It’s been difficult some days don’t get me wrong, but I’ve found having a
healthy balance between home and work life has really helped me. So I thought
I’d share with you some of my tips for managing to keep this balance, and
hopefully it will help some of you to do the same.

Leave work at work.
First things
first, as difficult as it may be in some jobs it is important to leave work at
work, I remember when I was working in healthcare, I would go home and spend
hours thinking about clients wondering if they were ok etc. It wasn’t healthy,
I couldn’t do anything about it and as much as it sucks sometimes, you need to
put yourself first, take some time away, forget it all for the night.

Often we do not
realise how bad we need time for ourselves until it becomes too much, the aim
of this is to take some time for yourself each night, whether that be an hour
of tv, or a half an hour gym session or even a night of blogging, whatever
helps you relax, you do that! I often find a face mask, a couple of episodes of
my favourite show- I’m into my crime docs at the moment and an early night
helps me.

Try to avoid stress.
Easier said than
done right? Work can be a very stressful place, especially when you are there
more than you are at home (most of us right?) but it’s important to try avoid
piling extra stress on yourself to help you maintain a healthy balance. Organisations
like the FSB help with a number
of business issues but what else can you do to balance your work and home and
home life properly?

When
you work a lot it is often easy to neglect your social life due to being a
tired a lot, but it is important to still see friends after work/on the
weekend. Go out for a drink and have a good time, laughing is a great way to
reduce stress in your life and make you feel better. (P.s. don’t have too much
fun on a work night, haha)

It’s ok to say no.
Your manager asks you to do overtime for the 3rd night this week and you just don’t
want to, it’s okay to say no and not feel about it. You are allowed to say no
to extra work if it is not part of your job role, you do not need to feel
guilty for not wanting to say behind, you can do what you want to do. YOU are
important.
Eat better!
A lot easier said than done right? I am the worst for eating properly, I am forever eating takeaways after work as I feel too lazy to cook. However if you eat three balanced meals a day you are likely to feel a lot better, because to be honest there isn’t much worse than being hungry. It’s important to start the day right, I usually have eggs and toast, however there are other suggestions like cereal or oats. I’ve found some great oat recipes on this website. Making sure you have a good lunch is essential too, sandwiches or salads are often a good choice.

Get plenty of rest.
Another one that I really struggle with, getting enough sleep at night. If you have a
good nights sleep it is more than likely you will be better at work the next
day, I know when I’ve had a poor nights sleep and go to work it’s hard to focus
and you feel awful and it just drags you down. Try to remove yourself from all
devices at least an hour before bed and give yourself time to wind down.
